3. The Context of Laïcité and Secularism
Christianity operates under France’s strict constitutional principle of laïcité (state secularism), a legacy of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution that enforces the strict separation of church and state. Under this framework, religious expressions are kept firmly out of public administration and public schools.
