Pray for COSTA RICA

Christianity is the predominant religion in Costa Rica, practiced by roughly 80% to 83% of the population. Costa Rica stands out as the only country in the Americas that designates Roman Catholicism as its official state religion in its constitution, though the government strictly guarantees and protects religious freedom.

The religious landscape is primarily split between a historic Catholic majority and a rapidly growing Evangelical Protestant population.

Major Denominations

  • Roman Catholicism: Roughly 50% to 52% of Costa Ricans identify as Catholic. Catholic traditions are deeply woven into the country’s national identity, laws, and calendar.
  • Protestantism and Evangelicalism: Accounting for about 27% to 31% of the population, this is the fastest-growing religious group. The movement consists heavily of Pentecostal and Evangelical megachurches, alongside smaller numbers of traditional Baptists, Methodists, Seventh-day Adventists, and Lutherans.
  • Other Groups: Small numbers of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, and non-Christian minorities live alongside a growing secular population (16%) who believe in God but do not follow a specific religion.

Cultural Impact and Holidays

Christian values heavily influence daily life, language (with common phrases like “Si Dios quiere”—If God wills it), and town names. Major national holidays center around the Christian calendar:

  • Semana Santa (Holy Week): The week leading up to Easter is a massive national holiday featuring dramatic street processions, family gatherings, and business closures.
  • La Virgen de los Ángeles (August 2): To honor the nation’s patron saint, over a million Costa Ricans take part in an annual pilgrimage, walking from all over the country to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Cartago.

English-Speaking & Expat Communities

Because Costa Rica has a high population of expats, there are numerous bilingual and English-speaking Christian ministries across the country, especially in the capital and coastal tourist hubs:

  • San José Metro Area: The International Baptist Church Costa Rica provides regular English-language services, youth Sunday schools, and local community outreach groups.
  • Guanacaste / Beach Communities: Well-known options like Tamarindo Church and Beach Community Church in Playa Brasilito cater to expats, tourists, and locals on the Pacific coast with non-denominational, Christ-centered services.
